Illustrations for The Washington Post
I absolutely love doing editorial work, and here's a compilation featuring my work for The Washington Post - including some process snaps!
First out is an illustration on how a recent iPhone update enables the device to charge when renewable energy is peaking in the power grid, giving solar, wind and water power precedence over fossil and nuclear energy. The sketches were made directly in Adobe Illustrator - something I find convenient when the imagery consists of a lot of geometrical shapes. Usually I start out pen on paper, but sometimes it's just faster to head directly into the computer.

Here's one for the tech section on how to properly recycle rechargable batteries. As you can see below, this concept started out as a wonky paper sketch. This is in fact my preferred method, since I find a great sense of freedom in drawing by hand. But Illustrator's editing capabilities definitely comes in handy when the need arises to revise the color palette!

This one's for an article dubbed Lost/Found, delving into the world of GPS tracking devices. My initial idea had a totally different vibe than the finalized illustration. As often happens, the input of the Art director was truly valuable in the process, and this one actually made it into The Post's own A Year in Illustration compilation, featuring the favourite picks of the newspaper's editors.

The one below is for a new column in the Tech section called Quick Fix. Juggling this many elements in a layout is always a fun challenge, and I think we managed to walk the thin line between dynamic and messy here!

Last but not least, my very first commission for The Post, and one of my personal favourites. Playing with color, texture and form in this one was so much fun. The article was called Techperks, and was an exposé of the different ways tech companies spoiled their employees working from home during the the pandemic, with take out pizza, exercise equipment and housewares.

Drop a line in the comments and tell me what you think, I'd love to get your input!
